The Aspie #7 – Being Confused about… Console Games

Consoles were all the rage when I was growing up. Unfortunately, I only had access to one. That wasn’t part of the Console Wars.

That takes care of my Nintendo Collection. Prior to building that, I had a small collection of PC Games for a Personal Computer of mine. I mostly found these games in either a Supermarket Isle next to DVDs and Magazines or a branch of GAME when it had a presence on the island of Ireland.

The one that consumed my attention most was The Simpsons: Hit & Run, for obvious reasons. My least favourite mission was Set to Kill because of the expectation of driving all the way back to Krusty Lu’ Studios in 50 Seconds from the Gas Station near Wall-E-Weasel! Having seen many attempts at it, I think you need two things to succeed: A Hit & Run metre 25% or less full, since that can be a nightmare at the Squidport, and the traffic to be light on the final bumpy hill up. And my favourite car to drive was Skinner’s Sedan mostly because of Agnes Skinner’s cutting lines.

Another one that consumed my attention a fair bit was Worms World Party. Usually on that one, I would customise Multiplayer Games of utter chaos between the teams already created by the system! From Crates spawning all over the place, to Super Sheep being able to swim underwater, to a Nuke dropping at the start of every round! Though I’m not sure they really got the Irish accent right… Sometimes sounds American Irish to me.

Others that were in my hands were the PC version of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie, which was a click-to-progress adventure. The PC version of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, which was a series of Mini Games set in five parts of Bikini Bottom. And Monopoly Tycoon, which I didn’t really get that deep into mostly because I couldn’t load it at all until Windows XP was my OS.

I also owned most of the UK dub of the ClueFinders series, including the Real Life Adventure Kit and Mystery Mansion Arcade, which had no UK dub as far as I am aware. Not sure it really helped as a supplement to my education but… It was something that appealed to me visually so… I kept on playing them! Until I gave them to my younger cousin.

So that’s my history with Console Games. But why do I use the Confused Emoji in this Thumbnail? Well, I’m part of a Social Club for Autistic People. It houses a PS5. And I’ve fallen in love with one game on there in particular: Astro’s Playroom. And playing through that successfully, as well as watching Let’s Plays of certain classic games, has made me hungry to explore other types of console game out there. Especially since to really finish a Pokédex 100%, you need to have connections, you need to have commitment, and you need to have passion for the franchise as a whole. And if truth be told, I don’t.

But you know what I do have? Knowledge. Of other ways to access games and people to play with! Find out what they are at 3 PM today. Happy Christmas from the Aspie behind the ADog Blog!
